Thanks to Karen who brought some over to Vienna just recently I am the proud owner of a pair of "Surge" Heelys. These are trainers with a wheel in the heel:
Looking in all other respects like a shoe,
... it's possible to roll along at up to running speed! Wildly popular with nine year olds in places like US and Japan they're on my ultra-wideband radar as a way of reducing transport time (and having fun ;-)
Grind, baby, grind!
That said, they have saved me a bit of time on some of the more tedious stretches between Tubes and trains. E.g. the Heelys would eat up the infamously long Bank <-> Monument internal change, and about half the loathsome Waterloo to Waterloo East walk became entertaining. It's worth noting there's a lot to be said for anything that engages the brain that would otherwise be subjected to the monotony of say walking down a long train platform. Heelys are great for this!
Walking in Heelys is surprisingly do-able. It's not really much extra work; the only difference is a slight click-click as though in (womens') heels. The wheels are easily removed if you're to suffer an extended period of having to actually walk.
The downside is in the early days of learning missing a transition from run to heel results in bit of flailing. Simply not caring is as useful a skill as ever...
Check out the Heelys site in particular "how to heel" then the "Action" video for some shots of grinds and tricks.
Buying Heelys is best done IMO via ebay. I snagged the Surge, a high-ish end shoe, for US$50. This is pretty much what I'd pay for a pair of shoes at a discount store in London let alone a comfortable sneaker pushing the edges of a multimodal transport paradigm. Shipping abroad is probably another $30. I wouldn't waste money at a UK retail outlet: way too expensive.
Still early days for me to say but without a doubt fun, with a side order of actually occasionally useful. As my skill increases and I get some tricks down (e.g. backwards, one footed, grinds) it'll be even more fun and the scope of where they're useful might increase too.
Definitely a giggle at parties!

Nicely written introduction on Heelys and I am glad you are enjoying them. My two sons love theirs as well and hardly ever take them off. Everytime we leave the house they grab their Heelys and off we go. And yes, they are definitely a conversation opener.

Posted by: achim at March 26, 2005 18:37Excellent article about Heelys. I've been riding for 2 and a bit years now, along with my younger brother and sister, it's great fun and never seems to get old, the only problem seems to be the uneven streets of England (as you mentioned in your article).
Shopping Centres and places like Tescos & Asda are great places to go and ride as well as skateparks of course.

I bought my Heelys from www.Heely.co.uk and although I was a bit worried about ordering trainers mail order, the guy, Steve, couldn't have been more helpful. And they arrived the next day, which was great when you can't wait to get 'em. He also had videos of how to heel and other cool stuff on his homepage. His prices were a couple of quid more than some of the other sites, but it DID include delivery and the service was TOP. HEELYS RULE !!!

The build quality is excellent, no shoddy workmanship!! £70 for a pair of Heelys, you would pay more than that for a regular pair of NIKE trainers (unless you get your trainers off the market, Dodgy,dodgy)

I was a little uneasy about riding them at first becasue about 8 months ago my horse fell on me and broke every bone in my foot. The doctor says I'm all fixed, but I was still a little nervous. I bought my second pair Evolutions yesterday, (Sport's Chalet $70). I use my Lasers every day and now with the Evolutions I can try some rails. Oh yeah, by the way my 8 year old son taught me to heely, I'm 43 years old. See you can teach an old dog new tricks!

i bought my first pari of heelys{revolutions} about 4 or 5 months ago. i never really took them off and enjoyed amazing my friends with crazy tricks. my brake wore down so much that u could see my heel through the bottom so i bought my second pair{evolutions}and cant wait to start grinding

At supermarkets and malls I have had people come up to me with kids that have Heelys and they just like to talk about it. I don't think I've gotten any strange looks, just curious, maybe even envious. To be honest, though, I am a bit timid when it comes to using them out in public. I'm sure that will change in time as I am a new user. I guess this makes me the "oldest" active Heeler but for me this is not even a factor for people don't even have a clue how old I am. Adults who have not yet discovered this new sport form are missing a good time!

I am 12 and i have had my heelys for almost 8 months now. I take them everywhere and i just love them so much! Its the best in shops like Tesco or Sainsburys cuz the floor is so smooth! All my friends are getting the ones with 2 wheels but i cant do it with 2 wheels it feels rely wierd! I would seriously reccommend them to anyone!

Hiya I just got heelys couple of weeks ago and they are soo good, I am really small in height and give me a little extra height as well.
I have only falen once and that wsa in asda when i feels under the trolley it was soo funny but i was alone so got up asap and ran!! lol
i recommend everyne has a pair of these!!

I have been heelying for close to 2 yrs, I'm only 12 and i live in Ausralia. I heel in the shoping center, mostly because of the extremly smooth floors. I have nearly give people heart attacks when they see me. I hope everyone enjoys heelys as much as I do!

Kids love'em. So don't give up hope if you are waiting just chase them up by e mail and hopefully yours will arrive too.

The full story on CRUZSHUZ is as follows. They are not allowed to sell trainers with a wheel in the heels, because they are patent protected by HEELYS in USA. They have been to court several times and have been told to stop selling them. This is why you can sometimes get an answer and other times you cannot. They have to keep dissappearing till the dust settles from the courts. Cruzshuz stole the idea and produced their own crappy version of them. You get what you pay for in this world and if you pay 20 quid then you get a trainer that falls to bits in weeks, the wheels fall out and frankly you look like a pikey because you cannot afford the REAL thing. So if you want get them cheap, then go ahead and get the cheap rip off versions that do not last and line the pockets of criminals. Otherwise do the decent thing and get proper HEELYS, there are loads of deals at the moment try www.flywalk.co.uk or www.streetgeeks.co.uk or just google heelys and you will find the deals.

Hi With regards to Cruzshuz - I bought a pair at the end of July and they arrived really quickly. Unfortunately they were to small and I need to exchange them - Unfortunately they are not answering my emails. I have just sent a letter to the address on the website. Not sure whats going on with them.

I'm 20, me and my mates have just ordered some heelys! Why are they aimed at kids? It seems like that anyways.
I feel like a child but they look so fun, however, i'm not sure i'd use them without my mates (might get beat up a little bit by chavs).
My only wish is that they were this popular 10 years ago. Ah well...
how do you work the heelys because i am getting some and i don't know how to take them out or put them in when i want to

Heres some tips:
To start, hold on to a table or chair
then put one foot in front and one on back, one heel with the other tip of the foot touching.
do NOT start on pavment!!

Unfortunately, the inside of the back of the shoe wore out and now the plastic inside tears up my socks and hurts my feet. I also wear size 12 shoes and the heelys are a little small on my. I'd really like some size 13 heelys, but they don't make them. I really like heelys and miss wearing them.
