Thanks to Karen who brought some over to Vienna just recently I am the proud owner of a pair of "Surge" Heelys. These are trainers with a wheel in the heel:

Wheel In The Heel

Looking in all other respects like a shoe,
... it's possible to roll along at up to running speed! Wildly popular with nine year olds in places like US and Japan they're on my ultra-wideband radar as a way of reducing transport time (and having fun ;-)

Learning to heel

As you can see, I've had some use out of them. Learning in Vienna was a real gift: the roads and pavements are super smooth, and an uninterrupted surface is a necessity to learn on. Any glitches and irregularities will usually stop heeling. I can't yet heel on London paved pavements; if I ever am I suspect it'll still be quite mentally demanding. Consider that skating with eight wheels is a skill most people take about a week to learn: now you're down to one on each foot, i.e. no fore/aft stability at all.

Is it possible to mess up doing the basic heel? While heeling is probably a little harder than skating I haven't even come close to a slam - once the front of the foot touches the deck you simply stop, or are forced into a run if you're doing any speed. Flexing your ankle back too much kicks in more rubber at the heel, more braking than the outright stop of several square inches of rubber hitting the deck.

This version of the shoe has a grind plate. For the brave and skilled it's possible to for example jump onto handrails and slide down - a gnarly way to tackle a staircase. I'm not even close to being able to do this, let alone land on a shoe that is mobile...

Grind Plate
Grind, baby, grind!

I think in places with pervasive smoothness like Vienna with its modern roads and pedestrian zones you can really save time. In London they're not a great deal of use outside: pavements in Old Britain are paved and heeling is intolerant of even small changes in level. (Partly this might be my skill: watch this space. Certainly compared to skates and bikes there's definite effort/aptitude needed.)

That said, they have saved me a bit of time on some of the more tedious stretches between Tubes and trains. E.g. the Heelys would eat up the infamously long Bank <-> Monument internal change, and about half the loathsome Waterloo to Waterloo East walk became entertaining. It's worth noting there's a lot to be said for anything that engages the brain that would otherwise be subjected to the monotony of say walking down a long train platform. Heelys are great for this!

Walking in Heelys is surprisingly do-able. It's not really much extra work; the only difference is a slight click-click as though in (womens') heels. The wheels are easily removed if you're to suffer an extended period of having to actually walk.
Wheel Removed

Attention whore

These are a big win for those who enjoy being checked out, although it's more from puzzlement. For my first exposure to Heelys in action the thought "vampire kid!" sprang to mind: imagine seeing for the first time someone switching seamlessly between walking and floating and that's about the emotion of those around you: total confusion.

The downside is in the early days of learning missing a transition from run to heel results in bit of flailing. Simply not caring is as useful a skill as ever...

Check out the Heelys site in particular "how to heel" then the "Action" video for some shots of grinds and tricks.

Buying Heelys is best done IMO via ebay. I snagged the Surge, a high-ish end shoe, for US$50. This is pretty much what I'd pay for a pair of shoes at a discount store in London let alone a comfortable sneaker pushing the edges of a multimodal transport paradigm. Shipping abroad is probably another $30. I wouldn't waste money at a UK retail outlet: way too expensive.

Far more versatile for short trips than skates which have a relatively huge latency taking them on and off: it's possible to walk, heel, run, heel, walk almost without a noticable gap.

Still early days for me to say but without a doubt fun, with a side order of actually occasionally useful. As my skill increases and I get some tricks down (e.g. backwards, one footed, grinds) it'll be even more fun and the scope of where they're useful might increase too.

Definitely a giggle at parties!

Nicely written introduction on Heelys and I am glad you are enjoying them. My two sons love theirs as well and hardly ever take them off. Everytime we leave the house they grab their Heelys and off we go. And yes, they are definitely a conversation opener.

Excellent article about Heelys. I've been riding for 2 and a bit years now, along with my younger brother and sister, it's great fun and never seems to get old, the only problem seems to be the uneven streets of England (as you mentioned in your article).

Shopping Centres and places like Tescos & Asda are great places to go and ride as well as skateparks of course.

There's some useful videos at for people to check out Heeling further.

I bought my Heelys from and although I was a bit worried about ordering trainers mail order, the guy, Steve, couldn't have been more helpful. And they arrived the next day, which was great when you can't wait to get 'em. He also had videos of how to heel and other cool stuff on his homepage. His prices were a couple of quid more than some of the other sites, but it DID include delivery and the service was TOP. HEELYS RULE !!!

Posted by: Wayne Plowright at February 19, 2006 16:46

I think Heelys are great value for money. The build quality is excellent, no shoddy workmanship!! £70 for a pair of Heelys, you would pay more than that for a regular pair of NIKE trainers (unless you get your trainers off the market, Dodgy, dodgy)
Overall, Brilliant product, most definitely here to stay!!!!

I got my first pair about a month or so ago, and it has to be the most fun I've had on wheels in ages. I was a little uneasy about riding them at first becasue about 8 months ago my horse fell on me and broke every bone in my foot. The doctor says I'm all fixed, but I was still a little nervous. I bought my second pair Evolutions yesterday, (Sport's Chalet $70). I use my Lasers every day and now with the Evolutions I can try some rails. Oh yeah, by the way my 8 year old son taught me to heely, I'm 43 years old. See you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Hey, Nick, I'm 63 (though I look more like I'm in my 40's). I take good care of myself and have great fun with my HEELYS (Revolution and Slide models). At supermarkets and malls I have had people come up to me with kids that have Heelys and they just like to talk about it. I don't think I've gotten any strange looks, just curious, maybe even envious. To be honest, though, I am a bit timid when it comes to using them out in public. I'm sure that will change in time as I am a new user. I guess this makes me the "oldest" active Heeler but for me this is not even a factor for people don't even have a clue how old I am. Adults who have not yet discovered this new sport form are missing a good time!

Looking for a pair for 7 year old, 37 year old and 40 year old - just don't tell the 4 year old yet though!

So anyone doing a discount for 3 pairs or more in the UK or shipped cheaper from the States? Size 13 kids, Size 6 Adult, Size 10 Adult UK sizes.

I'd really appreciate a response to this from those here.

Saw them a couple of years ago, but I guess pester power is a wonderful thing now, as we can all have a great time with them.

Cheers, Jon

Problem I've found buying Heelys from the USA is the customs charges for getting the shoes, you have to pay extra on top, plus it takes some time to arrive!

I've heard about some heelys scam going round, some companies are trying to pass fake heelys off as real ones, and apparently they break real quickly. So i'm gonna watch where i buy them from- so has anyone here bought any from i just wanna know if theyre reliable

Hope this helps.

Posted by: sra at November 29, 2006 22:49

i really love them

Posted by: denaja at November 30, 2006 22:45

I ordered from Cruzshuz on the 3rd Nov one pair came immediately, the other came a few days ago as they were waiting for a shipment from abroad - true to their word, they supplied the shoes before the end of Nov as promised.

However, I have another pair outstanding with them and reading your comments, I am now a bit worried that they wont turn up and the phone number is permanently engaged!!

If you hear anything, please will you post it here to let others know.

Many thanks,

Cruzshuzeu are a completely shamless, a thief. Don´t buy them anything. The don´t send you what you buy, they don´t answer back any email or phone calls, there is no way to return what you did not buy. Believe me, don´t buy Cruzshuzeu

I ordered my 8 year old son some Cruz Shoes over a week ago and am still waiting. After reading the comments on here about I am now really worried. I promised my son a pair for being so good at school and getting a great report and doesnt sound like I am likely to get them during the summer holidays which is really disappointing and he will be very upset. If I dont get them in a week or 2 are paypal any good at refunding the money to you??

Posted by: Sian UK at July 25, 2007 11:16

by the way I dont even get an answerphone when I phone Cruzshoes. It is either constantly engaged or rings and rings and no one ever answers but they took my money really quickly!!!

Posted by: Sian UK at July 25, 2007 11:18

The full story on CRUZSHUZ is as follows. They are not allowed to sell trainers with a wheel in the heels, because they are patent protected by HEELYS in USA. They have been to court several times and have been told to stop selling them. This is why you can sometimes get an answer and other times you cannot. They have to keep dissappearing till the dust settles from the courts. Cruzshuz stole the idea and produced their own crappy version of them. You get what you pay for in this world and if you pay 20 quid then you get a trainer that falls to bits in weeks, the wheels fall out and frankly you look like a pikey because you cannot afford the REAL thing. So if you want get them cheap, then go ahead and get the cheap rip off versions that do not last and line the pockets of criminals. Otherwise do the decent thing and get proper HEELYS, there are loads of deals at the moment try or or just google heelys and you will find the deals.

I sell affordable Generic Heelys in my ebay store. They are $20 plus shipping. I ship worldwide. These are not the cheap flea market garbage you see everywhere. They are very comparable to Heely's quality. If you want to try Heelying before making the investment in the name brand, or don't want to spend the money on your children's growing feet, check out my Air Sport Collection. These same shoes are being sold in the mall kiosks for $40! Make sure you always measure your feet, all roller shoes run small. Check the insole measurement.

I'm 20, me and my mates have just ordered some heelys! Why are they aimed at kids? It seems like that anyways.

I feel like a child but they look so fun, however, i'm not sure i'd use them without my mates (might get beat up a little bit by chavs).
My only wish is that they were this popular 10 years ago. Ah well...

Posted by: Adam :) at March 21, 2008 00:42

how do you work the heelys because i am getting some and i don't know how to take them out or put them in when i want to

Posted by: shemira at March 23, 2008 11:23

I love my new heelys! They are kind of hard at first, but, you will get the hang of it.
Heres some tips:
To start, hold on to a table or chair
then put one foot in front and one on back, one heel with the other tip of the foot touching.
do NOT start on pavment!!
I hope these help!

Until then wheel on!

I'm 34 and until a few months ago I wore my heelys and loved them. Unfortunately, the inside of the back of the shoe wore out and now the plastic inside tears up my socks and hurts my feet. I also wear size 12 shoes and the heelys are a little small on my. I'd really like some size 13 heelys, but they don't make them. I really like heelys and miss wearing them.
